DENVER -- Trevor Story's record-setting home run streak ended with a swing and a miss.
The former Irving High School standout was kept in the park for the first time this season by San Diego and slugger Matt Kemp homered twice and drove in six runs to help the Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 16-3 Saturday night.
Story was the first major leaguer to homer in each of his first four games and had six total before going 1 for 5 in this one. He struck out three times, including in his last plate appearance in the ninth inning, and committed his first error. He also turned a nifty double play in the fifth off a flip from second baseman D.J. LeMahieu.
"He'd probably like to hit a homer every game, but it was a heck of a run," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Story said there was an element of relief in the end of streak.
"I wouldn't say I was putting pressure on myself to do that, but yeah, it's kind of a relief," Story said. "I enjoyed it. I think mostly the games we won. I didn't really enjoy them that much when we lost. Yeah, it was cool."
Kemp's solo shot to left in the third inning traveled 448 feet and his three-run shot in the fourth over the newly raised fences in the right field alley went 428 feet. Both came off left-hander Jorge De La Rosa (0-1), who allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings. Three of his five walks came in the second inning, a prelude of things to come.
"It was command," Weiss said. "There was nothing wrong with him physically. It looked like a struggle throughout, the second inning on in particular."
De La Rosa left the clubhouse without speaking to reporters.
Kemp has homered seven times off De La Rosa and 39 times against Colorado in his career. It was Kemp's eighth career multihomer game and his fourth against Colorado -- but first for San Diego.
Cory Spangenberg also hit a three-run homer off De La Rosa in the six-run fourth when the Padres took a 7-0 lead. Kemp added a two-run single off Jason Gurka in the sixth, and Wil Myers hit the longest homer of the night, a 453-footer off Chad Qualls in a six-run ninth.
Drew Pomeranz (1-0) gave up two runs and four hits in five innings. He had seven strikeouts, including two of Story, and walked three.
After starting the season with a major league-record 30-inning scoreless streak, the Padres have scored 29 runs in their last 15 innings at Coors Field.
The 13-run margin of defeat was the Rockies' biggest since losing 20-5 to Philadelphia on May 26, 2008, and the largest at Coors Field since a 15-2 setback to San Francisco on May 13, 2007.
Colorado did win three challenges, including two safe calls by first base umpire Marvin Hudson that were reversed upon replay in the sixth
